Hello everyone, well having already blogged about the upcoming week I sat down at my keyboard only to realize I may actually have nothing to write, well hardly as many of you know I'm not one for keeping opinions to myself. Alright, so go get yourself a coffee or tea if you haven't already, it's OK I'll wait here....... twiddle, twiddle, dum dee dum dum dum, twiddle, twiddle, yawn...
OK you're back. So let's look at the week to come.
Seems President elect Obama is going to be annoucing his security cabinet tomorrow with none other than HIllary (I'm not mad a Bill anymore) Clinton as secretary of state. Hmm... a woman secretary, hey I thought woman's rights had gone beyond this, a woman for secretary. OK OK so it wasn't all that funny. There are some in the US media who have criticized Obama's choices for his cabinet stating that he has too many people who may not be able to bring about the new changes he has envisioned and promised. We shall see what this week brings for both his new cabinet announcement and the media's reactions.
As the week begins we'll probably see more turmoil go on with the markets, nothing new here, those of you who have lost your shirts, well prepare to give up your pants. Yours truly was/is not immune to the downward spiral of the markets, but I'm staying steadfast and not making any rash decisions. So far the loss is one on paper as I have no intention of retrieving the money invested. I cannot help but feel for those who were close to retirement and have seen their life savings and retirement funds simply vanish, it must be devastating and my heart goes out to them. The big three automakers I'm sure will continue to count their losses and look for aid in some way. If I may be so bold as make a prediction i believe that of the three the one that stands to lose the most and has the most possibility of going chapter 11 is General Motors. Both Ford and Chrysler will survive the former for their great line-up of trucks and the latter for their Jeep series, ubiquitous Caravan and having pushed boundaries with the likes of the 300, Challenger and Viper. In the case of GM it has been having problems over the last several years, if not decades, keeping up with it's American cousins and the boys from Japan. For starters and, in my opinion, their cars lack luster and crowd appeal as compared to the aforementioned workhorse offerings from Ford's truck division, the muscular Hot-Rod appeal of Dodge and the adventurous youth-targeted Jeep series. The only thing that could save GM, and here I go out on a limb, is if they hurry up and get the Volt in production and out to the public. The Volt, GM's unique entry into the hybrid market is a departure from the other hybrids offered so far. The Volt is powered solely from it's electric motor, the gasoline motor on-board only runs a generator that is able to recharge the batteries and provide for range extension if the driver wishes to go further than the initial 60 Km provided by the charged batteries. All this to say that the Volt could be the answer to GM's problems if they can get it into production and if they can market it appropriately. Everyone must remember that GM got into the electric car business before just about anybody with the amazing EV1 which unfortunately was scrapped, for still clearly unknown reasons. They had a winner then and the new Volt could be a winner now, only time will tell.
I will leave this entry on this last solemn and serious note. The Mumbai attacks in India this past week only makes the world realize that terrorism and hatred still abound and that the earth is no closer to being a safer place. I can only hope that the world somehow finds a way to peace as it would be the greatest gift of mankind to bestow on the future.

Joke of the week if not the year...
Hey did you hear the joke about the Liberal, Bloc Quebecoise and NDP members of parliament who walk into the back of a dark bar and broker a deal to topple the Tori minority government?
Yeah, I hadn't heard it either until this morning. So to alleviate any possiblity of this happening Mr. Harper decides that this coming Monday will no longer be an opposition day and preventing the big three, No! not the major car makers, from tabling a motion to form a coalition government. Perhaps the Liberals, Bloc and NDP feel they got jilted during the last fed-up, errr. federal election. Well stand in line boys as even now as the snow gently falls on many of our fair cities in this great country of ours, there are still many a constituent complaining about the non-event election while enjoying Tim Horton coffees and sitting in Canadian Tire auto service waiting rooms. So, when is the next opposition day when same will be allowed to introduce the motion to oust Mr. Harper from his seat, well believe it or not Dec. 8th. Now, when most of the country will be going about it's regular business of getting the kids to school on time, getting themselves to work on time and then realizing there isn't much time before Christmas, well we Quebec residents will be voting. Yes, not only will we have to contend with doing our civic duty, which this proud Montreal will do, but we also have to contend with a barrage of media coverage coming out of Ottawa that will ensue pending the tabling of the coalition motion. Ah yes, gripping television in the making for sure.
I'm I upset? Now, what would make you my dear reader, think I was upset or being overly condescending? I mean hey we only had a $300M election which was for not, heck they could have used a coin toss, "Heads you stay in power Steven, tails ehnn... we'll put the Liberals in for a while."
Disclaimer time..., I have made it almost a edict during most of my life that I do not talk politics, for one I'm what you might call a political neophyte, not perhaps proud of it, but one nonetheless, so as it stands I'm sticking my neck way out and risk having it chopped off by those who would be more acquainted with all things political. However, I have chosen to write about this as both an exercise in literary lunacy and an expose of my own limited, but yet passionate thoughts on the political landscape forming in our land during these touch economic times.
We need strong leaders, with integrity, passion and a willingness to work together and make this country of ours economically strong, scientifically and industrially progressive and a world leader in both social and business ventures. Tough call huh? You bet, but that's why we have the ability and the duty to vote every 4 years for individual who we think embody those very virtues of which i speak. Unfortunately this morning's announcement was like a kick in the teeth. We, as the people, had our say and I agree with Mr. Harper that the political make up that we decided, whether it did or did not change anything, was decided by us Canadians and should not be subjugated by those who did not win the election.
Now with rant over and feeling somewhat vindicated (hmm.... wine) I will bid you all farewell and return you to your regularly scheduled mayhem and me to my pillow where I hope to have sweet sugarplum dreams about honest, well-meaning parliamentarians frolicking in tulip-laden meadows. Yes, I also still believe in Santa!

Weekly update for Nov 30 - Dec 6 (December!!!???)
hello all a friend of mine recently sent me a message asking to resume my weekly posts. I'm must confess that, although I had all the good intentions of continuing my posts, somehow life seemed to have gotten in the way and I tripped over it. Now where is that broom? So without further adieu, here is a post for the ahem... upcoming week which is already some 70% over, hey let's all look at the bright side tomorrow is Friday. Now I must say that at this very moment 9:07AM I should be practicing my job interview questions as yours truly has a job interview tomorrow morning. Am I nervous? Not really as having had several job interviews now I pretty much know what will be asked of me, but of course as tomorrow morning rolls around the butterflies will take flight in my tummy, although come to think of it I've never really felt any lighter for it :)
Alright, so my last entry was back in Oct just before the great Canadian Federal redundant election, remember that? Yes $300,000,000.02 (that's six zeroes folks) spent to let Mr. Harper know that as Canadians we really don't see any other alternative at the moment, but to keep him in Ottawa as we have other things to attend to such as working hard, working harder to keep our jobs, looking for jobs, watching other people lose their jobs, wondering when we'll lose our jobs and paying our taxes, did I mention working hard? Oh yeah and posting status reports on Facebook :) Of course, I duly did my duty and voted on that day, and no I'm not going to say so don't ask. Even as I walked to the cardboard shield of the polling station I somehow felt that my vote would do absolutely nothing to change the course of this election or so the polls said. Of course the highlight for me was to watch the spectacle on CBC during the live, captivating coverage of elections 2008 hosted by Mr. Mansbridge. I like the CBC and Mr. Mansbridge, but what I saw that evening kind of boggled my mind. The set looked like something from "Who wants to be a millionaire?" and the whole spectacle looked like a "American Idol" wanna be. I suppose they are trying to appeal to a younger audience and give the whole election coverage some panache, but in the end folks the whole thing boils down to a bunch of people counting little pieces of paper and the whole country watching little numbers changing on the screen and wondering what it all means. In the end it didn't change all that much other than somehow spur the Quebec government to call an election and so here we go again, the Quebec populace will now have to don our Winter jackets, boots and tuques and go out to our local churches, community centers and schools (how many election ped days is that anyway?) and go vote for a new Quebec government. Now let's get it right this time, let's actually make a change, everyone vote for the Walrus party... no wait the Pigmy party... no that's not it.. oh yes the Rhinoceros party, this will certainly shake up the Quebec legislature, literally and figuratively.
I believe in my last entry I had mentioned the economy and in the last few weeks it has finally tanked and so did the price of a litre of fuel. The last time I checked at the local corner gas station it was somewhere around $0.87/lt. Now that the US has a new president and the whole country seems to have to put their fate and resolutions in his hands we shall now see if he can make the radical changes in both the foreign and domestic policies and increase consumer/investor's confidence to kick start the US economy. This is extremely important for the entire world economy as what happens in the US's backyard will ultimately affect what goes on in your own yard. In my own opinion things will get worst before the world sees the economy get any better. Some analysts have said that the recession will last throughout 2009 while others have speculated that things should pick up by next Summer (Jun/July 2009) I tend to agree with the latter, I believe today's markets and governments are much more careful now not to repeat what happened in the 30's and the 80's. With the global economy there are more intertwined factors and so a shift in one country's economy can and does seriously affect the economy in another country, both positively and negatively. This is the case here in Canada, the US started feeling it first and ultimately hit Canada several months later and so too will the economic upturn. I only see things getting better sometime in the Fall of 2009 for us, that is if the President Obama's vision can become a reality. Again, these are just my gut feelings, I don't really have any basis for them so don't go making any rash decisions on the rantings of a neo-econophyte*, I just like talking and writing about this stuff.

and... the Alouettes didn't win the cup, the only grey they will be seeing is if they drink Earle Grey tea. Now I will admit I'm not a huge sports fan, in fact the only two sports I really watched with any interest was baseball and F1 racing, but now with the Montreal Grand Prix getting the Denver boot put on its collective wheels and Montreal having lost its beloved Expos oh so many years ago and and the Alouettes losing to the only province that up to recently was the most prosperous in Canada, well what can I say? It's just too much for a man to take, I'll go sulk now in the corner and make another coffee.

So Halloween came and went and this year my darling little daughter was dressed as a cat, uhm no dog.. uhm goldfish? No, actually she went to school dressed as a cat with the whole face painted gig going on and everything provided by my wife and when she came home she announced that she wanted to go out trick o' treating as a dog, so a face wash and a few brush strokes later and voila! she's looking like Wishbone wearing a Winter coat :) I was able to keep a promise to myself and built a dummy, hah and you only thought God could do that! I called him Fred the dead guy and put him on the front porch wearing a turtle-neck, ripped jeans and a tuque. The thing about Fred you see was that his head was actually one of these novelty candy dishes and when the kids approached he would speak. I wasn't there to see the effects first hand, as I took my daughter out on what ended up being a 2 1/2 hour Halloween ordeal. In any case my wife said the dummy was a great hit and the kids were terrified of it... ha ha I'm terrible aren't I, next it will be a chain-saw wielding Santa on the roof!! (insert evil laughter here)
Alright, so what do we have in store for the upcoming week? Well, as aforementioned, Quebec residents have the dubious honour of going back to the polls and it seems the snow that fell on Montreal will be staying. CNN and other American and world media outlets will be watching the unfolding of the economic crisis and President Obama's continuing selection of his cabinet that will "hit the ground running" in January as he put it. Good-luck Mr. President
For those of you who don't follow it, NASA's shuttle endeavour is up in space docked to the International space station that is now a huge assembly orbiting the earth once every 90 minutes at an altitude of about 250 nautical miles. The space station got an additional bathroom and a water recuperation system that will allow up to 6 astronauts to recycle perspiration and urine into potable water (and you thought being an Astronaut was a glamorous job) reducing the station's requirement for water brought up from the shuttle and Russian re-supply vessels. See you can learn so much from this blog :) The shuttle will be returning to earth this Sunday. The shuttle fleet will be mothballed in 2010 so NASA has a very ambitious schedule to launch and finish the construction of the International Space Station, one of the most complex international projects ever undertaken. On a side note next year NASA plans on sending a shuttle to the Hubble Space telescope on what will be a final maintenance flight to fix the aging telescope.
So I hope you enjoyed this entry as much as I enjoyed writing it. Hopefully, now that I know at least one person reads this stuff, I will endeavour to post some regular entries.

2008 a real year of change
Back in mid-March I found out that my place of work will be closing its doors at the end of June. First there was the obligatory shock, followed by some denial, but now almost 2 months after the announcement I have come to realize that it has happened and that I will have to take action. What that is is not entirely clear at the moment, however safe to say that I will probably be blogging a little bit more, if for no other reason, but to give myself some respite from what will surely be hours upon hours of job hunting. I look forward to the challenge of a new job and both the uncertainty and adventure that it will surely bring. I still have many projects on the go and probably many more to come and from time to time I will drop by my blog and write a little bit on each one.

Voluntary Simplicity Blog Site coming soon
I am a great advocate of the voluntary simplicity movement and have written about it even in this blog several years ago. Lately I've been giving some serious thought to creating a blog dedicated to voluntary simplicity and economic self-reliance. Primarily aimed at providing information to average people on ways to save money around the home, the blog and site will eventually promote a more simplified method of living within the sometimes very confusing and socially driven environment in which we all find ourselves. Since the vehicle for this initiative is the web the Blog will start with the basics on saving money on computers, software, furniture and will move to other corners of the household to finally finish out in the garage or workshop where the page will attempt to help consumers save money on home repairs. Much more than simply a how-to site, the articles and overall objective of the site will be to empower it's readers and give them the tools to learn how to fend for themselves and learn from past experiences and troubleshoot problems from what they have already learnt in other situations. This will by no means be an easy feat as the page is still very much under development, but the main overall goal and mission has been set and will inevitably guide the production and path of the new site.
When will the site be published? This is a very good question and as work progresses this blog will be updated and a URL will be posted the minute it is available.

I have no idea what happened during the last post, I somehow was able to complete discombobulate the font format of my blog. Anyway, that posting was transferred from my podcast blog. Unfortunately I'm going to have to close my podcasting site until I can bring up my own server again as I had it running way back in the Spring of 2006. It seems the hosting people that I have found are very sneaky with their FTP settings. They give you a maximum size of 13 MB for an upload to their FTP site, however they only give you 5 minutes to do this, otherwise the system times out and your upload dies. So since my upload speed is at a maximum of about 512 Kbps I'm going to have to resort to running my old server again. It's currently 10:30 PM on a Sunday and I have work tomorrow, but I'm going to hook up the old boy and fire him up to see if Solaris comes up and see what the IP address is of that machine. Then in the next few days I'll re-install the website on that server until I can ascertain that I have enough traffic to warrant buying a monthly hosting plan. The reason why I want to get the Podcast site up and running again is that if one Googles Electric Vehicle Podcast, my entry comes up number one in Google, I certainly cannot give up this privilege. I will post again when the site is up and running.

First Astronomical Observations of 2008
Last night I took out my Meade ETX-90EC for the first night of observation in 2008. It had been well over a year since I actually used the telescope and did any observations, but late in December I had downloaded a planetarium simulation software called Stellarium on my Mac and discovered that Mars was very prominent in the early night skies over Montreal where I live. For the following few weeks I waited with impatience to find a clear milder evening to go out a get a glimpse of the planet Mars. So at 9:30PM EST out I went to meet my telescope that had been sitting on the front porch for the better part of an hour getting aclimitzed to the colder weather. This is a process that is required as going out into the cold with a warm closed telescope such as the ETX-90 causes turbulence of the air within the tube and decreases both the clarity and precision of the instrument. Once out on my driveway the first target this evening was to actually be the Orion Nebula as the constellation Orion stood out so well and the fuzzy patch that is the nebula beckoned to be viewed. Using my 26mm Plossl eyepiece I carefully found the nebula in my finder and was greeted, by a rather greyish, fuzzy patch, but it was still quite stunning as I was looking at a stellar nursery that is the Orion nebula. I then looked almost straight up at the ecliptic to find Mars glowing with its reddish hue. After having quite a difficult time trying to lower myself enough to look through the smaller spotter scope I finally found Mars and starting with the already mounted 26mm eyepiece began to observe it with higher and higher magnification. I ended up going up as high as 180X with a 12mm eyepiece on a 2X Barlow multiplier and although the seeing was not great and the focusing was giving me problems I nonetheless could make out some different patches of colour on Mars, this was truly thrilling. Just before I went inside for the evening I decided to try and find the Andromeda galaxy, but by then some wispy high altitude clouds had begun to roll in and I had to pack up my scope. However, I did see the oddest sight as apparently a flock of Geese or similar bird flew silently overhead in the famous delta wing pattern. Once they were out of sight I brought the telescope in and while I waited for the condensation to dry on the lenses I enjoyed a cup of chocolate and contemplated purchasing some additional eyepieces for the ETX
